SATC Hikes on June 2nd - Haldeman Island & Hawk Rock

Sign up for hikes hosted by Susquehanna Appalachian Trail Club as part of the Duncannon area's National Trails Day schedule - followed the the Duncannon Appalachian Trail Community designation festival!  The two hikes are: 

June 2, Saturday, 8:00AM 
Haldeman Island Birdwalk
P: Leisurely T: Easy L: 2 miles, 0 driving miles 

Join Scott Bills of the PA Game Commission on a guided Haldeman Island birding hike. Usually closed to the public, this 990-acre island is managed by the PA Game Commission for waterfowl and served as a rearing location for young eagles brought to PA from Canada as part of the eagle restoration area. Bring binoculars and wear light-colored clothing and hiking boots. This hike is part of Duncannon's National Trails Day hosted by local hiking clubs prior to the Borough's A.T. Community designation festival at noon. Must register with hike leader in advance. MEET at Haldeman Island parking area, accessible off PA 11/15 N just north and across from Ranch House Restaurant, Duncannon. Follow the driveway back to parking. Leader: Kim McKee, kmckee@appalachiantrail.org.

Hawk Rock Hike for Duncannon A.T. Designation Day
P: Average T: Strenuous L: 8 miles, 0 driving miles 

Hike up to Hawk Rock as part of the Duncannon Appalachian Trail Community Designation celebration. This hike is for the intermediate to advanced hikers. We'll take the steep way up the A.T. to Hawk Rock. We'll continue on the A.T. for a few miles and turn down a steep side trail to a forest road that will take us back to Duncannon. MEET only at the Duncannon Recycling parking area at the end of Watershed Drive. Leader: Trisha Sanders, ilvprple31169@gmail.com.

Two new blogs for local hikers: TrailVistas.com & Hiking Around Midstate PA

Two great new blogs for hiking enthusiasts have started up in the greater capital region, one from a Duncannon Appalachian Trail Community Committee member!  

Trail Vistas comes from DATC's Sean O'Shell described as the best place to find scenic vistas with trail information from local hikers.  The photos are breathtaking and maps/hike descriptions are very thorough - for the next time you're sitting around on a beautiful afternoon thinking about trying a new hike!  Many hikes in the Duncannon and South Mountain area on or near the A.T. are featured including Hawk Rock, Table Rock, Sunset Rocks, White Rocks... notice the theme?  Sean is encouraging feedback on the new site so please leave comments.

From Cumberland Valley Appalachian Trail Club President, Jim Foster, comes Hiking Around Midstate PA & Beyond, a community blog hosted on WITF.org.  Hiking Around Midstate brings information about hiking trails, environmental issues, recreational funding challenges and trail maintenance in Central Pennsylvania.  Recent announcements include Appalachian Trail Museums 2012 Summer Programming and the dedication of the new Trindle Rd Appalachian Trail Parking Lot, a project CVATC completed in partnership with Middlesex Township with funding from Mountain Club of Maryland's Miles Fund Grant and the South Mountain Partnership. 

Hiking up Peter's Mountain

The views from Peters Mountain in the winter are spectacular!  Get a new view of Duncannon and the Clarks Ferry Bridge from above by taking a hike up Peters Mountain.  It's 1.5 miles from the Trailhead at the Park & Ride area off PA-322 up to the top of the ridge, a few miles further is the Clarks Ferry Shelter and if you're feeling real ambitions you can do the whole 6.3 mile segment from PA-322 to PA-225!  Check out photos below.
